one month ago...
One month ago today was, I would have to say, the scariest day of my life thus far because that was the day when Sean underwent brain surgery. It's hard to believe that only 30 days have passed because it feels like a lifetime ago already. It's still surreal, even seemingly downright impossible. Not Sean. But then I remind myself that this is the very same guy that has defeated death before (it's true; he technically drowned on Father's Day 1988, I believe it was. His Dad Mike and brother Jason resuscitated him.). Sean, who has always defied the odds, whether mastering the "Nutcracker" on a GT, defying gravity at Baldy pipeline or pulling other crazy stunts involving throwing stars, nincome chux (spelling?), etc. And then there was that time I saved HIM in the Amazon (see below for proof):

webassets/savingsean.JPG
I'll save you, Stody!

All joking aside, it is hard to believe that only a month has gone by and Sean and Mel have adjusted as gracefully as they have. Sean is anxious, as he says, "to get this cancer sh*t underway." And, he is. They met with the oncologist today and aside from waiting a few more days until his rash has fully subsided, he's ready to begin radiation and chemo. Luckily, the nurse that works for the radiologist, Dr. Baker, is none other than Janice Yoshikawa, Brian's wife (Brian runs Maui Sporting Goods, who is sponsoring Sean's dive tournament on the 9th!). :-)

Unfortunately, once radiation commences then he will have to do it continuously and without interruption, so now comes the question of where best should it be administered. Team Stody's been doing its due diligence, so I have no doubt in my mind that whatever decision he makes will be the right one for him.

Next milestone up is his recheck on Monday, November 3rd with Dr. Donovan on Oahu. That is also the day that my boyfriend, Orv, and I are coming out to visit. Coincidentally enough, Orv's sis, Jill, lives in Lahaina where she runs her own interior design firm, Haven Interiors (website coming soon!). Jill's picking us up on Monday and we will readjourn with Stody, et al after he puddle-jumps back to Maui. Meanwhile, I'll keep you posted on his whereabouts and wellbeing over the weekend.

Lastly and most importantly, THE BRACELETS ARE IN!!!!! Tiffany had bracelets made up (much like the Livestrong ones) in gray for brain cancer awareness that say www.savestodysbrain.com. Next week will bring some major changes to the site and soon you'll be able to order them online. Feel free to email me or Tiff now if you'd like to place an order. They are $5 each and you can order in any amount. We will also have some for sale at the dive tourney next weekend.

There will be more announcements of fundraisers and additions to the site coming next week, so stay posted and please spread the word ---> SAVE STODY'S BRAIN!

the tumor made me do it...
...and other excuses most of us will never be able to pull off! (Actually, I think I'VE pulled the brain tumor card more than Sean has, if ever!)

Sean's rash got so bad he's resorted to streaking! Just kidding - this pic was taken nearly 3 years ago. And no, I'm sure that is not a Yeti in the picture.

webassets/seannonudebathing.JPG
C'mon! We're all going streaking!

But truly, Sean's having a good day today - the itchies are subsiding (no, it's not ukus), they're getting a lot of traction with doctors all over the country, he's got his oncologist appointment on Thursday and his follow-up appointment with Dr. Donovan on Monday - but most importantly, Sean's made a lot of progress in the just under one month since he underwent surgery. I can't even begin to imagine having my whole world turned upside down and having to adjust at lightning speed like he has. He's been a real trooper and I attribute a lot of it to his steadfast partner, Pale. Oops! I meant Melany! ;-) But really, with his girls (Melany, Jordyn and Pale) by his side, his strong network of family and friends, he WILL get through this, and damn if he won't be fashionable! Check out some new schwag I sent his way (Sean's always been about the free schwag):

webassets/ihadbrainsurgerywhatsurexcuse.jpg
I had brain surgery, what's your excuse?

Well, I've probably done enough damage, so I'll leave it at that.

Oh yeah! In other news, I forgot to mention that Maui Brewing Company reopened its doors to unveil a revamped Brewpub this past week. I am dying to try the Chocolate CoCoNut PorTeR Cake and all the new items on the menu. Maui onions and Kula greens, oh my! Read the press release at http://mauibrewingco.com/mbc/pr.php. (Meanwhile, 3,000 miles away the only way I could console myself was to indulge in Arrogant Bastard Ale onion rings and a Stone Pale Ale...um, yeah...all in Sean's honor!) What can I say? I really am Stody's sis!

a whirlwind monday for melany
Just a quick update on Sean:

Unfortunately, Sean didn’t have the relaxing weekend I’d hoped he had. Apparently he had an allergic reaction due to a drug interaction and has developed an all-over rash (Sure, they say it’s the meds, but funny how he breaks out in hives right before my upcoming trip. Coincidence? I think not!) :-) So Melany had to take him to the ER on Saturday and since then it’s been all about managing his discomfort with Benadryl, baths and topical ointments. Poor guy! What’s next?

Melany had a head-spinning day yesterday running errands, doing laundry, sending emails and making multiple phone calls to coordinate consultations with various specialists and arrange travel plans for Sean’s follow-up appointment with his neurosurgeon, Dr. Donovan, on Monday the 3rd. Whew! I’m exhausted just reading the recap of her day!

I will post more in detail tonight after I’ve had a chance to talk to Sean and Mel.

hawaii time
Ah, I'm not even back in the islands yet but already I'm on "Hawaii time" --> "I'll post tomorrow", and now suddenly a week's elapsed. Or maybe it's a hereditary affliction, those promises of posting regularly! (Oooo, low blow to Stody!)

But truly I apologize for the delay in keeping you all updated. As you know, Sean's Dad, Mike, arrived on Tuesday and has been much better about chronicling his daily progress.
Below are highlights of the week:

MONDAY, OCTOBER 20TH
webassets/stodellesndad10-20-08.JPG
Sean had a full-body CT scan and more bloodwork done at Kaiser to try to discover the source of infection. For now, it's back on antibiotics and resume the waiting game for the results.

The good news is Sean's fever has subsided and overall he's been having some good days recovering. Here's a pic before my Dad's departure. From left to right: Pale Ale (pronounced "Polly Olly"), Sean, Melany, Jordyn, and my Dad, Mark, who's apparently using "patient Sean Stodelle" (stuffed dog in scrubs that Jordy built at Build-A-Bear) as a headrest!

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 21ST
Mike arrived today and Sean got out for awhile to pick him up with Mel, then lunch and to pick Jordy up from school. Won't have test results for a few days but are starting to hear back from neuro-oncologists and other related specialists from all over the country.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 22ND
Sean returned to Kaiser for an echocardiogram and it's confirmed: Sean has a heart! (ha, ha, couldn't help myself, the setup for that one was perfect!)

Here's a beautiful pic of Sean and Melany together:

And the two "devilish" girls:
webassets/Paleindevilcostume10-22-08.jpg

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23RD
Some of Sean's dive buddies came to visit today and I hear brought fresh Ono caught at one of his fave dive spots. Yum! (and so much manly-er than bringing flowers!)

Sean also paid a trip to the barber today. Quote from Mike: "Barber was told to make him pretty (we might be here awhile)..." Poor guy probably didn't know where to start!

webassets/seanatbarber10-23-08.jpg
With a client like Sean, this guy is guaranteed to stay in business.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24TH
webassets/SeanandGangatOceanCenter.jpg
Throwing the shaka sign for da old boss, Sean!

Sean, Melany and Mike lunched at Seascape restaurant at MOC (Maui Ocean Center) today. I hear Sean was quite the celeb, being flocked by his old coworkers. No news on the medical front, as the oncologist is off-island until Tuesday the 28th.

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 25TH
webassets/JordynPalesoccer10-11-08.JPG
Jordyn modeling her soccer gear - Pale's the perfect accessory!

I hear Jordyn had a soccer game yesterday, but I haven't heard how her team did (it's 5:30am Hawaii time, so I doubt they'd appreciate me calling for the score!). I'm sure getting out in the fresh air and sunshine was a good distraction for Sean.

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 26TH
Which brings me to today...as soon as it's a decent hour to call you know I will, so check back for more updates later today!

Aloha!

a couple updates

A couple of updates worth noting:

Stody Update
I hear that Sean is feeling a little better today. He's had an on-again, off-again fever that they suspect is due to an infection of an undetermined location he must be fighting. Unless something has changed, he's due back to Kaiser tomorrow for a full-body CT scan to try to locate the source of infection. Once they get that under control, then he can begin to think about which course of therapy he wants to take. Until then, he can't begin radiation or chemo unless his immune system is strong enough to tolerate it. :(

But, Team Stody is in full effect and I understand from my Dad that they've contacted several specialists nationwide and have begun a dialogue with a few. I imagine he and Mel are feeling overwhelmed (to say the least!) and a bit daunted at the task at hand, but I also know they really appreciate all the help everyone's putting in. As of right now, I know Mike is headed out on Tuesday, so back-up reinforcement is on its way!

Dive Tournament Update
Details on the tournament can now be found on the "Roi Round-up" page. Please click on the link to download the PDF which contains more information, the entry application and release form. Again, many, many thanks to the folks at Hard Rock Cafe, Darrell Tanaka, Kuhea Paracuelles and Brian Yoshikawa for all their hard work making this event a reality. We truly appreciate it!

Update from the Reef
This isn't any ordinary update, this one has a porpoise! The underwater community has been on edge since the announcement of the Invasive Species tournament on Nov. 9th. Rois, Taape and Toaus everywhere are shaking in their gills. It has been almost one month since Stody became land-locked and frankly, some elusive Uluas and Kagamis are smugly happy about it!

stody went to the doctor and the doctor said...

"Let's stop this tumor from growing in your head!" Not really, but what is an oncologist saying, really?

I got to talk to Sean a little bit ago as he, Melany and my Dad drove back from his doctor's appointment at Kaiser. Thanks to all of the research everyone's been doing, they were able to prepare a list of questions in advance to pose to the doctor. In addition to meeting with this doctor, there are many other specialists nationwide that Sean and fam are collectively seeking out. Luckily, many of these specialists offer a complimentary evaluation of his path report, CT scans, MRI's, etc., then will make recommendations for treatment based on his individual case. It's amazing that we have such resources right at our fingertips and can educate ourselves on Sean's condition and cutting edge technology, clinical trials, etc. Many, many thanks to Isolde for all of her keen reconnaissance she's been conducting online. ;D

Unfortunately Sean's got a bit of a fever (probably just overheating from not being able to get his "gills wet" in so long!), which might indicate he's fighting an infection somewhere in his body. So, he's being baraged with a battery of more tests, bloodwork, full body CT scan, and so on. Sean, the new human pin cushion! Nah, the guy's pretty tough and besides, he's got all that body hair to cover up any needle marks. (ha, ha - those hair jokes just never get old, do they??) But unfortunately, they can't begin any treatment(s) until they discover the source of the infection and get that under control. :(

Anyway, it's hard to believe only 2 weeks have elapsed since I left my bro in the islands' care. As I'm sure many of you can relate, it's maddening and annoying to have to return to all of the obligations that existed before and after all of this came about. I hate feeling powerless and unable to affect my brother's condition. Yet somehow, I just keep cracking bad jokes, hoping they'll get better or he will. (something tells me he'll get better before they will!)

I've had some technical problems with the site and haven't been posting or uploading the pics as often as I'd like, but I've been able to get past that and am planning on adding quite a lot this weekend. In preparation for adding a new page, I'd like to ask friends and family to email me pictures - they can be of just you/your family or feature Stody and clan, something to make us all laugh, perhaps even a little story behind it, whatever you feel like sharing. I'm sure we can dig up some good stories from his SBCSD days, ya??

Please feel free to email me at m.seminaro@yahoo.com. And no spam! (of the email or canned variety) ;D

Sean sightings

Just more proof that you can't keep a good man down: Sean has been sighted this week at a few of his old stomping grounds: lunching and visting the old crew at Seascape Restaurant at the Maui Ocean Center and the clubhouse at Maui Lani, chatting on the diveboard at HSD, and going "incognito" under a new camo fleece blanket from the mainland Stodelle clan. Sean is becoming a regular rockstar, complete with paparazzi! (check out some recent photos on the "About Stody" page)

But truly, from self-reports and confirmation from Mel, Jordyn and my Dad, Sean is doing awesome. It seems there's a small bet being waged on who can take more naps - my Dad or Sean! (Dad's the current record-holder) I'm glad he's resting up, as tomorrow is a big day. Tomorrow they meet with Dr. Coty, an oncologist at Kaiser. I'm sure Sean is anxious to devise a gameplan and get things underway; he's never been one for sitting on the sidelines. I'll try to keep everyone posted as soon as I can on what I can glean from their meeting.

Thanks again for everyone's continued care and concern. Your support and encouragement is a huge testament to just how many lives Sean has touched. I know he personally believes and employs the "Pay it forward" mentality (basically, when you give of yourself and put it out there for others, it moves down the line, sometimes even around the globe), but I don't think he was quite prepared to be on the receiving end just yet! Part of all of this is to get Sean comfortable with the idea that there are many, many people that want to help, and it's his turn to recapture some of that good energy that he's doled out to so many others. And like Sean's pointed out, "It's not about the hand you're dealt, it's how you play the game." I'd say you're winning, Sean.

Everyday is like Sunday...

Personally, I'm glad everyday isn't like Sunday. I could never enjoy Sundays fully because there was always the lurking dread of knowing that tomorrow - Monday - would mean going back to school or work. But today I smirk because for those of you that didn't get the luxury of knowing Sean prior to, oh, I don't know, circa 1990, '91 or '92, you missed out on Sean's very Morrissey-like almost pompadour, complete with sideburns. (He was very good at Andrew "Dice" Clay impersonations at this time, too.)

Oh yes, Sean will deny it now, as he will also deny his Country phase. Fortunately for Sean, his phases were always subtle and very complimentary to him. Mine, on the other hand, not so much (Jordy, if you're reading this, I hope you skate right past the whole Goth/Emo look, that much black eyeliner, fishnets with Doc Martens isn't flattering on anyone. Trust me.).

But this Sunday I'm happy. I'm happy to know that Sean is home and in very good hands (being tended to hand and foot and kept good company by Nurses Melany and Jordyn, and my Dad, Mark). A lot of you have probably received the updates from my Dad and it is very reassuring to hear and see how well Sean is doing. The man can even make brain surgery look easy! When I get a migraine, I'm a complete wimp. I'm like, "Arrrrrgh!!! I can't stand the pain, gimme Excedrin Migraine!" Sean, however, has *brain surgery*, but as you know, hates to take anything stronger than a double black Stout. So he's been taking Tyenol. Tyenol?!? I don't know how he does it.

Which is a thought I'm sure that's already crossed many people's minds. How, how can I be this weak in my own life while he's being so strong? This experience, although it's not about me, is already having a profound effect on me and from what I can see, everyone else who's being touched by it. It's making me reassess what really matters in life, what kind of person I'm being, what I choose to stress over or what I realize now I've been giving too much credence to.

My brother's been my idol since I was little; I looked up to him, I wanted to emulate him, I sat silently for hours just because I wanted to watch him play Nintendo and was told I could do so "only if I didn't talk." Of course, easy! (I was kicked out after 20 minutes but manipulated my way back in, just to repeat said mistake. Reluctantly, he always let me back in.) But to my surprise, the man I thought I knew so much about is teaching me even more. I knew he was a great guy; I knew he was talented and freakin' funny. But this time, he's not teaching me BMX, he's not teaching me how to save the Princess and reach Level 3, how to play music by ear or learn Russian by osmosis while in deep REM-sleep (it doesn't work, so no need to try it!). This time, he's teaching me how to be a good person. Not how to live my life, as he wouldn't do that, he's never been overbearing, but why I should live my life. Tiff nailed it on the head with her quote from Nietzsche: "He who has a WHY to live can bear with almost any HOW." And I agree, if anyone can do it, Sean can. He's made a name for himself defying the impossible, surpassing our expectations, trumping the record.

Whew! Sorry, didn't mean to go off on a tangent. I will warn you that this website is changing (as soon as I figure out technically how to change it). I'll be adding a discussion board soon where you can log in and post, which will be much more interactive and real-time than the guestbook. I definitely want to thank you all that have emailed and posted your comments and concern, or even just sent happy thoughts Sean's way! We all have different ways of expressing our emotions and concern, and I'm grateful to everyone for the collective support they've been giving not only Sean, but Melany and Jordyn, as well. Which is exactly why I want to hear from you. Sean may not be able to respond to all emails or as quick as the rest of us, but it's so great to read the words of encouragement from people near and far. So many people are rooting for you, Sean! No pressure, but I know how you never like to disappoint a crowd! ;D

With that, I'll sign off. G'night all you Stody supporters!

A whirlwind 2 weeks...

It's hard to believe that it has been 2 weeks since Sean became violently ill, suffering from excruciating headaches, pernicious vomiting, blurred vision, and slurred speech. It was Tuesday, September 23rd that I got the call from Melany telling me she'd rushed Sean to the ER and they were performing a CT scan. She said they "believed he had a mass in his brain..." Those words resonated over and over in my head, as I'm sure they must have for everyone else.

To bring everyone who may have missed the play-by-play up to speed, Sean was Medi-vac'd from Maui Memorial to Kaiser Moanalua on Oahu. There he was admitted to the Critical Care Unit and it was determined (after further MRI's) that Sean either had a brain tumor or perhaps an abscess in his brain, they couldn't determine which. Surgery to remove the mass and biopsy would be necessary, but not for at least 5 days due to the pronounced swelling (edema) that was causing further vision problems, hallucinations, and seizures. He was put on anti-seizure/anti-convulsants, pain meds, steroids and diuretics to reduce the swelling. Surgery was slated for Tuesday, September 30th. Now all we had to do was wait.

Easy for us to say, as we were free to come and go as we pleased! Poor Sean had to endure a week of waiting, all the while being debriefed with every worst-case scenario you can think of! He took it all in stride as only Sean can do, never losing his quick-witted sense of humor or graciousness to the CCU staff, surgeons, his family and friends.

After what seemed like an eternity, the day had finally come. Sean was prepped the day before and day of for brain surgery. He was in a good mood, surprisingly upbeat yet anxious to get things underway. When his neurosurgeon, Dr. Donovan, asked if he had anything he wanted to say before he went under, he responded with, "I won't say 'good luck' because that would imply you don't know what you're doing. So I guess I'll just say 'steady hands' instead." The surgeon agreed that was pretty darn sagely advice.

Everyone involved in his surgery and subsequent care went above and beyond, being very communicative to Mel and the rest of the family, which was extremely appreciated given how many hours elapsed while he was in surgery. Our hearts all sank when we were told that they were moving forward with a full right temporal lobectomy, which is the procedure they'd forewarned us they'd perform if it was a tumor with the likelihood of it being cancer. Sean pulled through with flying colors, and it was a huge relief that he was super cognizant of the date, time, his whereabouts and what had transpired immediately after being brought to after coming out of almost 7 hours of surgery. It felt like a huge burden had collectively been lifted and we were so thankful and relieved that Sean was the same ol' Sean, already cracking jokes and poking fun at his appearance.

The next day was pretty rough - it was painful seeing all the tubes coming out of Sean and we all know how much he loathes being drugged. Dr. Donovan came in and met with us and briefly with Sean. He wouldn't know definitively about the tumor until the pathology report came back, but in the meantime it was identified as a "glioma" and it was important that Sean rest.

Well, like everything else in Sean's life, he began recovering at light-speed. By the second day the tubes were out, then on Thursday 10/2 he was getting out of bed and sitting in a chair, then by Friday 10/3 he was eating bacon and eggs and his bandages were upgraded from their former turban-style to a beanie...

All was going good until Saturday, when we all felt like we got kicked in the stomach as the results of the pathology report came in. Although we knew it was a glioma, we were still uncertain of what stage of its malignancy it was and were hoping for a good prognosis. The path report diagnosed it as a "glioblastoma multiforme, Stage IV," an aggressive form of brain cancer. I will never forget that moment, hearing that.

Needless to say, Saturday was a rough day for everyone, but especially Sean and Melany. Jordy was shopping with her Grandma Cindy, which was good because it gave time for Sean and Mel to digest the news and mentally prep for the fight for Sean's life that was already underway. Sunday she got to visit Daddy in the hospital before she returned home to Maui with her Grandma and Grandpa. I understand that Sean had a sweet-tooth so everyone happily indulged by bringing him See's candies, Choco-Taco's and anything else Mel could find in the cafeteria! I say give the man anything he wants! (Ok, but no beer until you're home!)

I understand from the troops still on the ground (that would be Melany, Mike and Isolde) that Sean's staples were removed today and he has been officially discharged, exactly 2 weeks later. It has been a long and life-changing past couple of weeks. A lot of tears have been shed, but there's also been a LOT of laughter. It reminds me of an often used saying in Hawaii, and one that my Mom personally subscribed to:

"If there's no rain, then there's no rainbows", or, in short, "No rain, no rainbows."

To me, that kind of summarizes Sean's life and the journey he's embarking on thus far. Therefore and with that said, I'm pleased to invite you to this website for Sean, which will hopefully be both a ray of sunshine and offer a little shelter from the storm, whichever and whenever he may need it.

Signing off with all my love to Sean, Melany and Jordyn.
~ Melissa
